The Design Process of an Architect
The Design Process of an Architect is developed for year 9 or 10 level Visual Communication Design classes.
The Resource has 3 components:
- Filmed interview with an Architect - Darren Naftal
- Questions to be answered while viewing the film
- A series of architectural drawing tasks that respond to a brief
The drawing tasks cover a range of architectural drawing skills and techniques:
Activity 1: Writing a brief
Activity 2: Preparing a site analysis
Activity 3: Floorplan concept drawings
Activity 4: 3 dimensional concept drawings
Activity 5: Ruled floorplan with conventions (symbols and dimensions)
Activity 6: Elevation concept drawings
Activity 7: 2 point perspective drawing
Practice Exercises: Reading a scale ruler & rendering surface textures
Tips on how to develop the tasks using Adobe illustrator
The film response questions can be printed A4 and the drawing tasks can be printed A3 so that the students can draw directly on the sheets. If your students require more room to draw, additional A3 sheets can be provided.
Darren Naftal has been very generous in his contibution to this resource and more of his work can be seen on his website
Darren is also interested in visiting schools and speaking to students about the design process of an architect. He was one of the three Industry Speakers at the 2016 VCV industry Speaker seminars held at Swinburne University. He also appears in the accompanying resource to the seminar that is available on the VCV website: 2016 Industry Speakers http://www.vcv.asn.au/index.php/resources/cds-and-dvds.html
